JESUS LOVED THE SEA OF GALILEE. It is mentioned in the Gospels more than forty times. Jesus gets in and out of boats nearly as many times. Many other times Jesus walks along the lakeshore. It isn’t hard to imagine why this is. The Sea of Galilee is captivating.

Ask people who have been to the Holy Land to tell you their favorite part of the experience, and nine times out of ten they will tell you about taking a boat across the Sea of Galilee. Tour companies operate boats of varying sizes, made to look like ancient seafaring vessels. Leaving the port at Tiberias, you sail north and east and soon find yourself thinking, “I’m on a boat crossing the Sea of Galilee! Jesus and the disciples crossed this same water again and again! I’m sailing where Jesus sailed!” If you’re like most people, you make your way to the front of the boat, blocking out all the people behind you, and you look at the lakeshore. There’s been very little development on the Sea of Galilee. You’re gazing upon the lake as it would have appeared to Jesus and his disciples.

Jesus’ love of the lake resonates with me. Nearly all the books I’ve written were written, in part, at the Lake of the Ozarks, about two hours from my home. I sit on my friend’s dock, Bible in hand, commentaries and books spread out over the table, and I read and pray while enjoying the beauty all around me. I feel that I can think more clearly and breathe more freely when I’m sitting at the lakeshore.

Some of the most beloved stories from Jesus’ ministry occurred at the Sea of Galilee. In the rest of this chapter we’re going to consider three of those stories: Jesus’ calling of his first disciples, his calming the wind and waves, and the night when he came to his disciples walking on the water. As we study these three stories we’ll consider how each of them answers the question, “Who is this man, Jesus?”
